matataki (n). the flicker of light)
Matataki is a series of paintings by Taiwanese-American artist, Aesther Chang that capture imaginary landscapes conjured from memories of various site visits. The mixed media canvases that make up this exhibition are inspired by observations on contradicting forces found in nature; Walks along a river are graced by fireflies in the dead of night; blue hour is broken by the first ray of light at dawn; A still pond metamorphoses. These unexpected contradictions in nature transform into moments of impermanent beauty. As a result, Chang’s works explore the relationship between luminescence and shadow, movement and stillness, serenity and chaos. They are a reminder that beauty exists where we least expect to find it.
